Mr Stephen Burrows DL

Mr Stephen Burrows was the High Sheriff of Merseyside for the year 2017-18.
Stephen Burrows, a career banker, is a Scot who joined The Royal Bank of Scotland in 1961 in Glasgow and served the Bank in various positions in Scotland and England prior to moving to Houston, Texas as the Bank’s Representative in 1975. He was appointed Senior Vice President and Manager of the Bank’s New York branch in 1978, Executive Vice President (North America) in 1982 and following his return to Glasgow in 1985 he was the Area Manager in that City.
Before his arrival in Liverpool in 1992, he held various posts in Scotland and subsequently was appointed Assistant General Manager in Manchester prior to assuming the position of Regional Corporate Director in the Corporate and Institutional Banking Division based in Liverpool.
Following retirement from the Bank, Stephen joined Brabners LLP in 2001 as Chairman. He is a past Regional Chairman of Coutts in Merseyside and North Wales and was appointed an Ambassador for Professional Liverpool in 2013, having stepped down as Chairman the previous year.
He is involved with various charitable organisations and is a Director and Trustee of Wirral Hospice St John’s and he is a member of the Investment Committee of the Liverpool Council for Voluntary Services. He is also the Chairman of the Empowering Youth Foundation, a children’s Charity.
During his time in New York, Stephen was a Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of the British American Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Foreign Bankers Inc. (New York).
He is an independent member of the International Cotton Association Limited and is a non-executive director of the International Cotton Association Mutual Limited. In addition, he is an Advisor to ICC Solutions Limited based in Warrington which is a global leader and a major international player in the Payments Industry.
He is an Honorary Fellow of the Business School and also a Regent at Liverpool Hope University.
He has served as a Council Member for the Confederation of British Industry (North West) and is a past president of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (Merseyside Region). He is a fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Bankers in England and Wales (FCIB) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland (FCIB -Scot).
He holds the office of the Honorary Consul in Liverpool for the Republic of Latvia.
He is an active member of Caldy Golf Club, Wirral and is a member of the Artists Club in Liverpool.
His recreations and interests are Golf, Football (Liverpool FC), Rugby, Opera and Theatre.
Stephen is married to Gillian and they have two daughters and four grandchildren all of whom he adores.
