Individual Honours

The badge of the MBE
The badge of the MBE
Honours are awarded by the Sovereign for an outstanding contribution by an individual to the community.  These honours bring lasting pleasure and satisfaction to those whose receiving them, to their families and friends.  The most frequent honours awarded are the BEM, the MBE, the OBE or the CBE.

Twice each year, a list of honours awarded to members of the public is widely circulated.  Each list is very largely comprised of ordinary people being honoured for having done extraordinary things.

If you know of an individual who is making a significant difference in her or his community and who stands out from all others in the same field, please do nominate that person for an honour.

The process is not difficult and help is readily available if you find it difficult to do.

The Lord-Lieutenant does not himself nominate individuals for  national honours  However his office is able to assist by giving guidance, providing the nomination form.  If necessary, a Deputy Lieutenant can help you with completing the form.

The form and more guidance can be downloaded at the Honours nomination website.

Remember that you must not discuss the fact that you are nominating someone with the individual concerned.  Strict confidentiality avoids the possibility that the system is compromised.

Local Presentations of Honours If a recipient of an MBE etc does not wish to attend an investiture at Buckingham Palace, then they can ask for the presentation to take place locally. The Lord-Lieutenant will then be asked to present the medal on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.  British Empire Medals will usually be presented locally by Lord-Lieutenants on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.

Royal Garden Parties  Each year, the Lord-Lieutenant receives a small allocation of places for Royal Garden Parties to recognise individuals who have served the local community or undertaken public service. If you wish to nominate someone for a Royal Garden Party, then you should write to the Lord-Lieutenant at the Lieutenancy Office address.  Give the person's details and why you think they should be nominated. This should be done in strictest confidence and the person concerned should not be aware of the request.
