Six thousand men left from Prescot Station on 30 April 1915, going first to Grantham, then to Salisbury Plain in September, and finally sailing from Folkestone to fight in Europe on 7 November.
It was particularly fitting that the Earl of Derby carried out this duty because 100 years ago the then Earl of Derby had been a driving force behind the raising of the four battalions of the King's Liverpool Regiment that quickly became known as the Liverpool Pals.
Some 1050 enlisted at St George’s Hall at the very first opportunity on August 31 1914.
The event was also attended by the High Sheriff and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool.
