![]() It is with very much sadness that the death of Professor Helen Carty is announced. Professor Carty was appointed Deputy Lieutenant in 2005 and was High Sheriff of Merseyside in 2011. Professor Carty died on Sunday 23rd April at home in Liverpool after a short illness. The Guardian newspaper published a full obituary. Liverpool Seafarers Centre located on Crosby Road Seaforth providing welfare support to Seafarers has opened a new Hub in Eastham located at the Queen Elizabeth Second Dock. The purpose of the facility is to provide Welfare Support to those seafarers berthed on the Manchester Ship Canal side of the Mersey. The Hub provides quicker access to the facilities as opposed to the long trip from Eastham to Seaforth.
The Lord-Lieutenant officially opened the facility. Among others present were: High Sheriff Lord Mayor of Liverpool Deputy Mayor of Wirral Mayor of Sefton Mrs Pamela Brown DL, representing the Trustees of the Seafarers Centre, who gave the address. The Vicar of St Mary's Eastham who conducted the blessing, the Revd Beth Glover. Representatives of: Peel Ports who bequeathed the building Mersey River Pilots Merchant Navy Merseyside Port Police Members of the Port Health Authority A cheque was presented to the Seafarers' Centre from funds raised by the Mersey River Pilots at their 250th Dinner in 2016 and from donations made by the Lead River Pilot in charge of the Three Queen’s Visit. The photographs above include one of two Philippine Seafarers who had just arrived at the Queen Elizabeth Second Dock. They were invited to the event at very short notice. Visiting the national Army Cadet Force Band Concentration at Altcar in Easter Week 2017, Mr Mark Blundell DL represented the Lord Lieutenant. Picture with some of the Cadets are L-R, Colonel Murdo Urquart, Chief Executive of the Army Cadet Force Association, Mr Blundell and and Colonel Bob James who was the Commanding Officer for the week. A guard of Honour met Mr Blundell before he toured the the training music stands.
